Document concurrent Rhode Island hours
For the Class B route, Rhode Island law requires at least 8,000 on-the-job hours and 144 related instruction hours alongside each 2,000 work hours. Keep school transcripts and employer records; prior-learning credit needs written board approval.
4
Check Massachusetts education and experience
The Massachusetts application page lists 600 approved school hours, 8,000 supervised work hours over at least four years, and a 15-hour code update class for journeyman applicants. School hours and employment records must both be documented.
5
Prepare the examination application
For Rhode Island, complete your registered program requirements before the licensing exam, as CCRI explains. Massachusetts directs applicants through eLIPSE for approval to schedule testing with PSI; use its current application checklist before submitting documents.
Electrician jobs and pay around Providence
In the BLS May 2025 Providence-Warwick, RI-MA estimates, electricians (SOC 47-2111) held an estimated 3,560 jobs. Their median wage was $35.57 per hour and $73,980 per year. The estimates cover the whole metro and include workers with different training and experience. They do not describe the pay of a newly hired apprentice.
BLS describes OEWS as a survey of wage and salary employment, excluding the self-employed. Its employment figure measures jobs held, rather than available positions. When considering an apprenticeship, request the sponsor's current pay steps and ask about work availability, travel, overtime and benefits before comparing an offer with the regional median.
Electrician tuition, apprenticeship costs and aid
RWU lists $2,000 yearly for related instruction. Southeastern's apprenticeship classes list $865 per year for 2026-2027. For a full diploma, MTTI publishes $23,150 tuition plus $150 in listed application and supply charges. NEIT lists $18,540 annual electrical tuition for 2026-2027; ask for the full degree cost.
MTTI identifies Pell grants and other aid requiring a FAFSA. Ask whether your particular program qualifies, especially for noncredit apprenticeship classes. Discuss WIOA training support with a RI DLT Career Center before registration. You can also ask a sponsor whether it pays classroom tuition, books or tools. The VA says GI Bill benefits may support approved employer training or apprenticeships; check the employer's approval first. Lincoln's electrical page specifically says VA education benefits are not yet approved for that program.
Can a seven-month electrician program make me licensed?
A short school program and a journeyperson license are separate milestones. MTTI offers a 30-week electrical diploma, but Rhode Island's Class B law still requires apprenticeship work and concurrent related instruction. The statute allows limited prior-school credit under specific conditions, with written board approval. Before you pay, ask the provider to identify the license requirement each course can satisfy and the employment hours you would still need.
Do I need an employer before taking Rhode Island apprentice classes?
For coursework to count in CCRI's Rhode Island apprenticeship route, you must be a registered apprentice and employed by a sponsor at the start of each program year. RWU also requires concurrent registered employment and says students are responsible for finding that work. A school admission offer alone does not establish an apprenticeship. Confirm the timing of your agreement and employment before beginning related instruction.
Can I use Rhode Island training for a Massachusetts license?
Massachusetts reviews documented out-of-state education and experience under its own rules. Its application FAQ says applicants need the relevant out-of-state forms and supporting records; the Board does not pre-review individual credit requests. Massachusetts lists reciprocity with New Hampshire, so do not assume a Rhode Island credential transfers automatically. Ask your school for transcripts and signed hour records that can support the application you plan to submit.
Are there evening electrician classes in Providence itself?
RWU Extension School publishes in-person classes at 1 Empire Street in Providence on Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-9 p.m. Its current school-year schedule runs September 9, 2026 through March 29, 2027. The four-year sequence supplies 600 related instruction hours. You must arrange the apprenticeship work separately. Ask about the next entry point and which year of the sequence matches any prior training.

Review the full qualifications and gather the required records before contacting the training center; an application does not establish selection.
